Basal Ice
(for more information about basal ice see: beginner's guide to basal ice)

(All these photos are from the ice-sheet margin near Kangerlussuaq, Greenland)

Englacial facies (non-basal) with bubbles and little debris

Stratified facies with debris laminae but few bubbles

Dispersed facies with few bubbles and scattered debris particles and aggregates ("clots") of silt/clay

Dispersed facies with 2cm "clot"

Stratified facies: debris laminae and bubble-free ice. This is actually a close-up of a debris band.
